How to promote yourself as a niche writer

Following my previous post about unusual sources of writing income, here are some tips on how to promote a specialist writing service and gain more freelance jobs.

As a niche writer you will be providing a very useful service to clients who need your help, and it is important to know how to market your own unique writing skills locally, nationally or around the world.

Promoting online can be done through some or all of the following:
• Business cards
• Press releases
• Internet forums
• Article marketing
• Social networking
You will of course need to have your own blog, website or your own freelancer profile page. If you join a big freelance jobsite, such as freelancer.com, you can include all your credentials and relative experience on your freelancer profile. This will encourage suitable publishers to select your bid, or to contact you with freelance job offers.

Business cards

It costs very little to have business cards printed, or you could design and print your own. A professional looking business card can be handed out personally when you talk to anyone about yourself. You can also hand your card to any local business owner who might be in the market for your service.

Press Releases

Issuing a press release about recent activities, connected to your niche subject, can be used to gain free publicity and could be highly effective for promoting your writing service.

Online press releases are a good way to provide links back to your web pages, and have the potential to get the attention of mainstream media. Local or national media can be sent press releases in the post or by email, or you could use a free press release distribution service

Online press release directories are generally indexed by subject, and anything you post can be accessed through an Internet search. Online press releases can also be featured on a blog, posted in business forums and promoted through social media sites.

Forums

There are several ways you can use online forums to promote a writing service. It is a very effective way of networking, as long as you stick to the rules and do not try to post links where they are now allowed.

Find an active forum that has a lot of members, preferable a specialist forum that matches your niche. Fill in your profile with your web address and contact details, and then do a lot of helpful posting. If you are allowed a signature link, that will appear in all your posts.

 Article marketing

If you write a lot of articles on your niche subject, and submit regularly to big article directories, these will show up in search results and you can provide information that will encourage readers to click on your link to find out more about your writing services.

Social networking

Make sure all your web content is compelling, and continue to add new items to your website or blogs. Social networks such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn can provide a niche writer with many opportunities to search and find potential clients, and for them to find you.
